Old Quail Family Pictures are on the following page.
For the Quails who have sent asking for
information about the family, I have to say that I am not aware of any
relatives living outside the UK who are not already known to me, however,
that is probably my fault.
The first Quail that I know of is a Timothy
Quail, a farmer, who married a Catherine Matthews. He is mentioned in the
death certificate of his son Timothy Quail, a Damask weaver, who married an
Ann Campbell. The census information for Timothy Quail, the Damask weaver,
indicates that he was born in Ireland, while one of the census forms for his
son William Quail, (my great grandfather), indicates that he was born in
Lisburn, Ireland. I don't really know yet when they came to Scotland, but
the earliest Scottish presence I have knowledge of, is the marriage certificate
of William Quail in 1867. Census information for 1871 shows Timothy Quail,
the Damask weaver, as well as William Quail and siblings, living in Scotland.
Based on census information, William's eldest sister was born circa 1855 in Ireland,
so presumably the family came to Scotland sometime between 1855-1867.
There was some suggestion, by a relative, that the Quail predecessors had arrived in Ireland from Scotland, via
the Plantation of Ulster. There is, however, no evidence to offer any
support for this theory. All the reliable information I have comes from my nephew
Dr. Josef
Khan, who is currently working in Japan. Joe has done a considerable amount
of research into the Quail family history and I'm sure if you contact him he
will be pleased to help.
I shall add more information to this page as and when it becomes available
