Acorn were a small successful computer manufacturer in the UK. The biggest part of the production when into computers for education, but they were also heavily involved in developing RISC chips. Sadly, onn a purly book-keeping basis, the company was sold off, for the benefit of the shareholders and shut down. One off-shoot ARM Ltd continues to go from strength to strength. Castle Technologies have taken over the manufacture of the Acorn computer under licence.
The operating system is quite separate from IBM's and Mac's. The RISC operating
system is ROM based, so it is very stable and of course, fully multi-tasking.
Running 4 or 5 applications at the same time is smooth and seamless, and this
on a machine that is now 4 years old!
Below are some sites related to this system:
Castle Technology - the new home of the Acorn computer.
RISCOS Ltd - the home of the RISC Operating System
Millipede - this company manufactures motherboards using RiscOS and are experts in video
processsing.
Archive Magazine - a magazine dedicated to all things RiscOS and Acorn.
Acorn Search - a site dedicated to all things RiscOS, ARM and Acorn.
Dave Woods - David is a friend who is an Acorn buff and is "into" space travel
and NASA.
